Washoe County Democrats are preparing to hold their county convention this Saturday at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Up to 2,000 people are expected to attend in order to elect delegates to the state convention in May. Elected officials, state and local candidates will also be speaking, including former state attorney general Catherine Cortez Masto, who is running for U.S. Senate.
The county convention is the second in a three-step process that Nevada Democrats use to award delegates and select a presidential candidate.
"Washoe County is allowed just over 600 delegates to the state convention," says Pam duPré, director of Washoe Democratic Party. "So it is really in the candidate's best interest to make sure that their delegates turn out for this county convention, so they have a full slate of folks who are willing to travel to Las Vegas in May."
Hillary Clinton won Nevada's Feb. 20 caucus and stands to gain a majority of the state's 43 delegates. However, the percentage of delegates could change between now and the state convention.
"Under the Nevada state delegate selection plan, people are not bound by the decisions they make at the precinct caucus or even at the county convention," she says. "They can also change their mind between the county convention and state convention, so yes, those ratios can change."
