Improvements in function as you age.

As you age, it isn't all downhill with respect to brain function. Some of the changes in the aging brain actually improve brain function. There is an increase in the use of both the brains right and left hemispheres to solve problems. When you are younger these hemispheres would deal with different concepts. Having both hemispheres process information when you're older gives you access to more data when you're reacting to different circumstances. The brain systems that participate in emotional regulation work better meaning less fear and anxiety. Furthermore, you will have more feelings of being content. As you get older the brain has an easier time accessing things you already know rather than trying to learn new things. Furthermore, the brain will have the desire to share what it has learned and take advantage of the new found knowledge. There are many more advantages to hear about on this week's edition of Relationships with Dr. Rebecca Jankovich.
