Did You Know?

· Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.

· Only 38 percent of people in the U.S. are eligible to donate blood on any given day, and less than 10 percent actually do.

· People with O- blood are potential universal donors of red blood cells. This means their red blood cells can be transfused to patients with any blood type.

· Whole blood donors can give every eight weeks (56 days).

· Approximately 40,000 pints of blood are used each day in the United States.

· The average adult has about 10-12 pints of blood.

· As little as three teaspoons of blood can save a baby’s life.

· Blood makes up about 7% of your body weight.

· One pint of blood can be separated into several components (red blood cells, plasma and platelets).

· Red blood cells must be used within 42 days.

· Approximately 1 out of every 7 people entering the hospital needs blood.
