For this edition of UNSOM Health Watch we are talking to Steve Matles, Environmental Health and Safety Officer for the University of Nevada School of Medicine, about workplace safety measures in healthcare settings—think gloves, bleach, and beyond. Leading this discussion is Richelle O’Driscoll, Director of Public Affairs for the School of Medicine and Division of Health Sciences.
Their discussion covered several topics including protocols for improved workplace health and safety and the risks that make such procedures needed.
For example, Matles said, "If you've got a fever or a rash, or you come in with sneezing or a cough, you probably want to let that health care provider know when you make the appointment." He added that there might be a separate waiting area in some clinics and letting healthcare workers know up front is a good practice.
