BRÜKA THEATRE 30TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON - ILLUMINATE

Reno, NV - Brüka Theatre’s 30th Season: Illuminate opens with THE MOORS, Jen Silverman’s dark comedy about love, desperation and visibility. This gothic, edgy, absurd and ruthlessly profound production is directed by gifted theatre artist Libby Bakke, who recently directed The Revolutionists at GLM. The Moors opens Brüka’s 30th season on Friday, October 7, 2022.

Season tickets go on sale September 1, and individual tickets for The Moors go on sale September 7, 2022. This is Brüka’s first time offering season tickets after the pandemic shut downs and supports the start of the season. Each show enjoys an opening night reception and a matinee talkback on the final matinee of each show. Season ticket holders save money on tickets and will have first choice of dates and if you are a Patron Gold, first choice of seats before tickets go on sale to the public. Season Tickets are on sale at: www.bruka.org.

November ushers in The BIGGEST little Theatre & New Works Festival. The 12th year features a variety of local playwrights and theatre artists performing and reading a diversity of work over a four day period. Submissions for shows will open on September 10, 2022. The festival plays November 10 - 13, 2022.

For your holiday titillations, an all original BUTTCRACKER ROCKSTAR opens Friday, December 2, playing through December 22, 2022. In this ridiculous parody of “The Nutcracker” Clara becomes a groupie to a flurry of spectacular & wickedly weird rockstars. Brükaisms abound in this 11th rendition of what began as a Brüka parody of “The Nutcracker”, and has evolved into a regional cult classic. More of a Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride than a tighten your toe shoes to the music kind of experience. This year’s non profit partner is The Eddy House.

January brings a critically acclaimed Broadway play to Brüka Theatre. This fast-paced, blistering comedy, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT, is written by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell and Gordon Farrel and based on the stirring true story of John d'Agata's essay, “What Happens There,” that ignited a seven-year debate on the blurred lines of what passes for truth in literary nonfiction. This ultimate showdown of fact versus fiction is directed by Brüka alum David Richards and runs January 20 - February 11, 2023.

In March, Brüka presents the World Premiere of WHEN CHURCHYARDS YAWN. This "Divine Comedy," is a fast-paced, witty, and masterfully rendered story of all Hamlet's dead characters in Purgatory. It's Jeanmarie Simpson's latest play, following a slew of hits, beginning with her award-winning A Single Woman, commissioned by the California Stage Company and premiered at the Oats Park Arts Center in Fallon in 2004. Simpson is known in northern Nevada as Founding Artistic Director of the Nevada Shakespeare Company, Piper's Opera House resident company at the turn of the millennium. Running from March 10 - March 25, 2023. For this show, all matinees are on Saturdays.

Following Churchyards, the masterful director Holly Natwora brings Martin McDonagh’s Tony Award winning play THE BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE to the Brüka Mainstage. The story of a plain and lonely woman, and her manipulative, aging mother whose interference in her daughter’s first and potentially last romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific. Playing April 28 - May 20, 2023 and partnering with The Assistance League Reno, Sparks.

Brüka’s 30th season concludes with the dazzling musical comedy KINKY BOOTS, by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein. Loosely based on the true story of a man trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, who finds inspiration in Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. Winner of six Tony Awards including best musical, Kinky Boots is looking for a diverse and talented cast and will play June 21 - July 22, 2023. Kinky Boots is produced in partnership with Our Center.

Brüka's Theatre For Children 2023 public and touring show is THE PARAMOUNT & SOMETIMES WILDY RIDICULOUS HISTORY OF NEVADA, a whimsical, wild & abridged journey through the history of Nevada. An original Brüka Theatre production that integrates theatre, history and social studies is created by Mary Bennett and touring February through July as part of The Pioneer Youth Program Roster. Also for children, Brüka will present their YOUTH THEATRE WORKSHOP INTENSIVE from JULY 10 - 22, 2023.

Brüka's 30th season theme "Illuminate" focuses on bringing light back to the theatre while shining a path for creating deeper, more meaningful connections and diversity within our community and lives. The goal is also to highlight local non profit groups and businesses in a positive partnership with Brüka Theatre.
