KUNR Wins Two Regional Murrow Awards
Reno Public Radio has won two regional Murrow awards in the small market radio category for region 2, which covers Nevada, California, and Hawaii. Check out all the winners, announced Wednesday by the Radio Television Digital News Association.
One award is for the news series category, recognizing our 20-part collection of stories looking at Nevada’s legalization of recreational pot. It’s called Cannabis in Nevada: The Rollout.
For that project, KUNR reporters Anh Gray, Noah Glick, and Paul Boger produced interviews and sound-rich features examining how the change impacts public health, the economy, the environment, law enforcement, and public policy in our region. We also worked with Bob Conrad and ThisisReno and Brook Bentley of the Northern Nevada Business Weekly on this series. Michelle Matus served as our digital editor and Michelle Billman was managing editor.
KUNR was also recognized in the best sports reporting category, highlighting the work of our student reporter Stephanie Serrano, who covered Reno 1868’s growing fan base. Her reporting is part of KUNR’s unique partnership with Noticiero Móvil, a Spanish-English multimedia news outlet.
Together, both organizations mentor student reporters from the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno to tell stories for and about our local Latino community. Those stories air in English on KUNR and appear online in both English and Spanish. We are one of the few public radio member stations across the country offering bilingual content.
