The City of South Lake Tahoe is launching a major round of improvements. Over $120 million will go toward 39 capital projects starting this summer.

One of the most anticipated developments is the 64,000-square-foot multi-generational recreation center, which city leaders say will be a major community hub. It’s designed as a space where residents of all ages can gather, play, and connect.

The $70 million center will replace the existing recreation center, which was built in 1975, said John Stark, director of parks and recreation. The old building will be demolished.

“The community wanted to see a new recreation center to include some new amenities. So for the new recreation center, there's going to be two full length basketball courts in the gym, an auditorium with a pool and lazy river, an event space, and an elevated running track. And it's just really going to be an incredible upgrade for our community that we're all so excited to be bringing on here next year,” Stark said.

The city plans to open the center in April 2026.

Several other parks and trails will also get upgrades. The city will fix the current skatepark and build a new street-style skatepark at Bijou Park, Stark said.

“The project includes converting an existing basketball court into a street-style skate park,” he said.

Cyclists will see changes too. A new trail segment will go in along Al Tahoe Boulevard. Nine new bike repair stations will be added near popular paths.

Streets in the Bonanza and Bijou Acres neighborhoods will be repaved.

Phase two of the Pioneer Trail enhancements will provide an accessible route from Ski Run Boulevard to Larch Avenue, said Steve Anderjack, project manager in the public works department.

“It'll allow residents and tourists to commute from Ski Run to Heavenly and the casinos in a safe and accessible manner. Some parts of that project are sidewalk upgrades, lighting upgrades,” Anderjack said.

The second phase of the Tahoe Valley Greenbelt project will include multi-use trail upgrades in the open space area behind The Crossing at Tahoe Valley commercial center where stormwater infrastructure and treatment basins will be constructed. Additional stormwater and drainage improvement projects will be constructed in the Bijou Park Creek and Bijou Acres neighborhood areas.

The city is also focusing on sustainability. Solar canopies and a new roof will go up at the police station. EV charging stations will power the city’s electric vehicles.
