Reno City Council got its first look at a proposed billion-dollar redevelopment project that would span several city blocks in downtown.
The ambitious residential development, dubbed West Second District, would take 10 years to build and include the tallest building in the city, three acres of tree canopy and a park.
Colin Robertson is the director of communications for the Don J. Clark Group, the principal architect and developer behind the project. He told council that the district will be focused on sustainability.
"The proposed redevelopment consists of 30 new mixed-use buildings, a new park, plazas, and walk-able streets, 1,900 residential units, 7,000 square feet of office, commercial, and retail space," Robertson explains, "and those are all elements contributing to a very sustainable new district for the downtown core."
The Clark Group is asking the city for $100-million dollars in tax subsidies to help with the project under a tax increment fund.
The council voted 4-to-2 in favor of moving ahead with due diligence but asked for another a month to look at the feasibility of the project before negotiating an exclusive development deal.
