Founded in 1972, the Festival this year includes two mainstage productions, Peter and the Starcatcher and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night.
Joe Atack, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, describes Twelfth Night as 'one of Shakespeare's three master comedy works … It's about twins who get separated and think each other has drowned. One of them, who is a female, disguises themselves to stay safe, but falls in love with the Duke, who is in love with another lady. Hijinks and misidentifications all around.'
Peter and the Starcatcher, says Atack, is 'the prequel story of Peter Pan. It is the story of how he goes from being boy to becoming the Peter Pan that we all know and love.'
Along with the mainstage works, the 2025 Festival presents a Showcase Series of performances on Monday and Tuesday nights, including Sierra Nevada Ballet, the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Reno Jazz Orchestra. The Festival also produces five additional shows of its own, including tributes to the Rolling Stones, ABBA, and David Bowie, the Modern Gentlemen, and saxophonist Dave Koz.
The Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival now holds the distinction of being, in Atack's words, 'the biggest producing outdoor theater in the state of Nevada.'
The 2025 edition of the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival runs from July 5 to August 25 at Sand Harbor, Lake Tahoe. laketahoeshakespeare.com.
