New UNR Student Center Is One-Stop Shop

Luiza Vieira

A new resource center at the University of Nevada, Reno, opened its doors for students on campus this week. Our contributor LuizaVieira has more on the William N. Pennington Student Achievement Center.

The four-story building, is surrounded by windows, modern architecture and different spaces to welcome students. The building combines many services that were once spread out around campus, like the writing center and help for veterans.

"If I were to describe it in a very simple term I would say collaboration."

That's Derek Furukawa, UNR administrator. He says the new center will provide even more resources to students.

New services include a Meditation and Reflection room and what Furukawa calls "social stairs", steps where students can study, eat and chat in a more communal way. Student Lacey Kremer, says this is an additional spot for students to go on days where they have to spend long hours on campus.

"I have homework to do, I need to eat and I need places to do that where I am comfortable being. The campus was really craving places for students to exist."

The 78,000 square-foot center is located near the business building and the quad.
