An Innovations High School graduate is the first recipient of a new scholarship, after winning an international music competition. Reno Public Radio’s Noah Glick has more.
The Delfeayo Marsalis Scholarship, named after the jazz trombonist, is awarded to a student within the Big Picture Learning network who both exhibits a commitment to community service and a desire to continue pursing music after graduation.
Innovations High School Graduate Julian Doehring was awarded the one-thousand-dollar scholarship after winning a competition in Orlando.
“Performing in front of the largest crowd I ever performed in front of, which was 600 people, it was just the most amazing feeling,” he says.
Doehring says he’s always been interested in rap music and poetry, but it wasn’t until he transferred to Innovations High School when he was able to explore that interest.
“Once I was in the studio, it brought something out of me that I’ve never even felt before,” he says. “And that’s how it came alive.”
Innovations High School is part of the Big Picture Learning network which emphasizes student-centered group learning and internships over traditional classroom lectures.
