A report from the City of Reno Fire Department finds the total property damage of January's Washoe Drive Fire totals around $4.5 million. According to the report, 28 homes and four outbuildings were destroyed in the January 19 blaze. Seven additional homes and four other outbuildings were also damaged. On top of property damage, fire suppression cost about $1.5 million. According to narratives in the report, a Washoe Drive resident, Lyle Teuscher, is believed to have started the fire when he disposed fireplace ashes in a metal container on his patio. In the report, he says he thought the coals were cold when he disposed them. One woman, ninety-three-year-old June Hargis, died of smoke inhalation from the fire. The blaze burned 3,100 acres. It spread quickly due to winds up to 78 miles per hour.
