Elko County Commissioner Demar Dahl is making a pitch to Washoe County that it join a growing number of counties and states that are asking for federal lands in the West to be transferred over to the states. Commissioner Dahl spoke in front of the Washoe County Board of Commissioners today."What do we do to try to bring more local control over the resources in our counties that are so important to our economy and our way of life."Dahl was appearing on behalf of the American Lands Council, which is the group spearheading this effort. He says in the West more than 50 percent of land is still controlled by the federal government. "So the mission of American Land Council is to try to, number one, determine is this a good situation? Is this the best situation? Would it be better for the people of the United States and, in particular, the people of the West, if this situation were changed?"Governor Brian Sandoval recently signed a bill creating a task force to study the feasibility of such a land transfer. The task force will be made up of a representative from every county in Nevada. Some of the questions brought up by the Washoe County Board of Commissioners included how public uses such as hunting or mining rights would be transferred from the federal government to the states.
