UNSOM Changes Name To Focus On Northern Nevada

University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine

The University of Nevada School of Medicine has changed its name to the University of Nevada, *Reno* School of Medicine. Let's turn to our news director Michelle Billman to learn why.

The change sounds like a teeny tweak, but it signifies a major shift away from UNLV in southern Nevada, which is developing its own med school. Spokeswoman Anne McMillin says it also reflects a growing presence in northern and rural Nevada.

"A lot of our clinical practice has been in Las Vegas for the last 30-35 years," she says. "So we're transitioning that over to UNLV and then we are recreating those programs here in Northern Nevada."

The school first opened in 1969 and held its previous name for more than three decades. The goal now is to expand medical training up north in the form of residencies and clerkships for students. But it'll be awhile before all the puzzle pieces are in place.

"If we can get the funding and find the partners and get the curriculum set up, those things work toward getting the program set up, and then attracting applicants and then training them and then keeping them."

McMillin says the school is working now to recreate programs that will teach students how to practice obstetrics and gynecology, along with surgery.
