KUNR reporter races on camelback, continuing a journalistic tradition in Virginia City
It’s not every day that journalists race on camelback, but the tradition dates back to 1959. KUNR’s Lucia Starbuck competed against another regional journalist on the fairgrounds in Virginia City during the International Camel and Ostrich Races to help keep the tradition alive.

Karen England has protested at the Washoe County School District in the name of “parental rights” for years. KUNR found she also rubs shoulders with some of the country’s most powerful conservatives.
“The fact that the two winning pieces were in polar opposite categories as well as topics, just shows the depth of reporting skill we have among our reporters,” said Vicki Adame, KUNR managing editor. “Both Lucia and Bert are invaluable members of KUNR’s newsroom. I’m extremely proud of both of them.”
KUNR is the NPR member station serving Northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra. The station is dedicated to continuously providing community news and information, celebrating local music and culture, and providing public safety services.
“We are deeply humbled and proud of these awards. Reporters like Bert Johnson and Lucia Starbuck are the reason why KUNR is an essential resource for our Northern Nevada and Eastern Sierra communities,” said Brian Duggan, KUNR general manager. “Congratulations to our newsroom and thank you to our listeners for supporting impactful, award-winning local journalism.”
