There’s a doctor shortage in Nevada. That’s why Governor Brian Sandoval is distributing $10 million to improve graduate medical training in the state. Reno Public Radio’s Anh Gray reports some of that money will go towards expanding several residency programs in Northern Nevada.
The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is getting about $4 million to boost several residency programs.
Dr. Melissa Piasecki is the Executive Associate Dean and this will help attract more doctors to the region.
“When we can open up our training programs and bring more people into Northern Nevada residency training in internal medicine, or family medicine, or psychiatry or geriatrics," Piasecki says, "the likelihood of them staying in our community is very high because they connect and the integrate and they become a part of who we are.”
UNR’s med school produces about 70 graduates each year. Last year, less than 10 stayed in-state for residency programs.
