Updated at 11:15 a.m.
The Dixie Fire was very active Saturday, according to CAL FIRE, with extreme fire behavior observed in the Coyote Hills, Horton Ridge and Ross Canyon areas.
Spot fires in Ross Canyon and off Horton Ridge threatened Dixie Valley, and engine and hand crews protected structures by removing brush, building an indirect fire line, and installing hose lays and sprinkler systems. Aircraft also assisted ground crews with extensive retardant and water drops.
South of Taylorsville, helicopters helped hold the fire in Devil’s Punchbowl as firefighters improved the line north and south of Montgomery Creek. Overnight structure protection continued in Clover Valley, Dixie Valley, Genesee, Taylorsville, Greenhorn and Cromberg.
Heavy smoke will continue to hamper visibility on Sunday, which may limit air operations throughout the day.
The Dixie Fire is estimated to be more than 893,000 acres and containment remains at 56 percent.
