Mt. Rose Ski Resort opened Friday and several others will follow suit shortly. Our reporter Sarah Parks has more.
The resort came close to opening on Halloween when it had 18 inches of snow on top of the mountain. But there were only 3 inches at the base, which was not enough to sustain skier traffic.
The recent cold temperatures have helped the resort maintain the 10 inches of snow needed at the base.
“With this last front that came in, we do definitely have the cold temps, we’re making snow round the clock as we speak, and we’re looking good to get open Friday morning.”
That's Mike Pierce, a representative with the resort. Mt. Rose has invested half a million dollars this year in what they call their snow-making firepower, which means now they can make more snow, more often.
The resort had a record turnout last season, after several years of drought.
