Apex Concerts presents its Grand Season Finale with “Spark of Genius,” a program with an all-star cast featuring violinists Stella Chen and Sean Lee, violists Matthew Lipman and Milena Pájaro-van de Stadt, as well as Apex co-Directors Dmitri Atapine and Hyeyeon Park. Works explore are all centered on the idea of what exactly is the spark of true inspiration and genius. Perhaps it is it the arrival of precocious maturity in the twenty-something year old Franz Schubert and his String Trio in B-flat Major. Or it may be the fervor and passion of the first love, as exemplified by Joseph Suk and his Piano Quartet Op. 1. Or pure brilliance of the mind of Felix Mendelssohn, one of classical music’s most celebrated prodigies, who also achieved some of the most refined and ingenious craftsmanship as evidenced in his majestic String Quintet in D Major Op. 87. The 2024 Reno Jazz Festival celebrates 62 years with an incredible lineup of jazz artists and artist educators and offering a richer, deeper and more diverse educational and artistic experience for participants devoted to educating and inspiring the next generation of jazz musicians.
This year's Festival features headliner performances by GEORGE, Terell Stafford and the Mazanita Quintet, 20+ concerts and workshops from leading jazz artists and educators, 110+ performances by student ensembles, two nights of jam sessions, and a closing student showcase like no other.
Acclaimed trumpeter Terell Stafford takes the stage alongside the University's faculty jazz ensemble, the Manzanita Quintet, as they kick-off the 2024 Reno Jazz Festival. Based in New York, Terell Stafford has been hailed as “one of the great players of our time, a fabulous trumpet player” by piano legend McCoy Tyner. Stafford is recognized as an incredibly gifted and versatile player, he combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism. Stafford’s exceptionally expressive and well-defined musical talent allows him to dance in and around the rich trumpet tradition of his predecessors while making his own inroads.
Considered one of the most creative and distinctive jazz ensembles in the northwestern United States, the Manzanita Quintet features pianist Adam Benjamin, saxophonist Peter Epstein, bassist Hans Halt, drummer Andrew Heglund, and trumpeter Joshua D. Reed. Each of these dedicated instructors maintains a busy individual performance schedule while forming the core of the University of Nevada, Reno's Program in Jazz and Improvisational Music.
Feeling inspired after watching the opening headliner? During this free and open to the public event, festival participants have the chance to collaborate and improvise alongside peers at the student-only Thursday night jam.

The 2024 Reno Jazz Festival presents the groundbreaking ensemble, GEORGE.
GEORGE features four individual “earthworkers,” as the derivation of the moniker implies, who excavate and create intense and intriguing music, the sound of which defies categories and labels. The visionary behind the quartet, John Hollenbeck, is an award-winning, genrecrossing composer-percussionist, renowned in the jazz and new music worlds. The quartet features: Anna Webber (tenor sax/flute), Aurora Nealand (voice/sax/keyboards), Chiquita Magic (keyboards/voice), and John Hollenbeck (drums/piano/composition).
