Dixie Fire: Aug. 25 - Sept. 1

More than a dozen firefighters in yellow hard hats and jackets trek up a dusty road. There’s an orange “Road Closed” sign in the forefront. The smoke is thick, gray and covering the far background, giving the photo a sepia tint.

Derek Williams is the incident meterologist for the Dixie Fire. He said temperatures are expected to rise over the next few days, and conditions will get drier in the afternoons. But, the forecast isn't all bad.

"The winds do lighten up considerably on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and that should help containment efforts at the least," he said.

Even as firefighters contain the large blazes we've already seen this year, Williams said there are more on the way.

"Well, I would say we're in it for the long haul," he said. "There's a lot of fires out there across the West."

As of this morning, The Dixie Fire has burned more than 1,167 square miles and is 45% contained.
