The new master plan for the University of Nevada, Reno campus encompasses a number of wide-ranging objectives and reflects input from a variety of stakeholders in setting a new vision for the campus and the surrounding community. It elevates the conversation about northern Nevada as a true “University Town” and is a prime example of close collaboration among the University community, the City of Reno and the Regional Transportation Commission.
The master plan is required to be updated every 10 years, and this new plan was approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents in December. The approval followed more than a year of input from a variety of stakeholders in the community.
The master plan was the subject of a conversation on KUNR'sBeyond the Headlines with University of Nevada, Reno Provost Kevin Carman and Reno City Manager Andrew Clinger. They were interviewed by KUNR General Manager David Stipech (air date 2-27-15).
The plan comes at a time when new businesses and industry are spurring growth in the area, and the university is experiencing record enrollment. This means the university must expand capacity and campus access at the same time. The plan reflects the need for sustainability, stewardship of resources, campus safety and security, residential housing, and new growth in technology and other areas that need to be accommodated. The plan has as a priority an emphasis on preserving and honoring the beauty, history and character of the campus.
The university’s strategic plan was also approved by the regents in December that reflects the vision of this master plan.
