Construction in Midtown will last until February 2019.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County (RTC) and Sierra Nevada Construction (SNC) are working to lower the impact businesses are seeing due to the renovation of midtown. KUNR contributor Kaleb Roedel of the Northern Nevada Business View has the details.

The $80 million project is in its first phase, which includes burying new utility lines and removing the old poles that obstruct the sidewalks between Liberty Street and Plumb Lane, and will continue until February 2019.

Prior to the construction, SNC and RTC crafted a program to support the businesses impacted by the construction. They are hosting monthly special events in Midtown, investing in advertising to support the district and providing business workshops. SNC also arranged a partnership with ride-share companies to encourage people to come to Midtown.

While most businesses are seeing minimal effects on sales, some owners believe the construction is unnecessary.
