Squaw Expansion Plan Finalized Despite Continued Criticism

Placer County released the final plan for the expansion of the Village at Squaw Resort last week. Reno Public Radio's Amy Westervelt brings us this update.

The final proposal for Squaw's expansion is not noticeably different from the draft plan released last year. According to Squaw CEO Andy Wirth, that's because it's solid as-is.

"All our development plans are to improve upon not just disturbed land, but 90 acres of asphalt."

But Tom Mooers, of nonprofit Sierra Watch, says the expansion still needs some serious work.

"Even if it's built on a parking lot, high-rises and a giant water park the size of Walmart are clearly not in step with Tahoe or the Sierra Nevada region."

Wirth is quick to point out that the proposal covers entitlements to develop, not a set-in-stone development plan.

The environmental impact report for the project is due next month and plans could be approved as early as June.

**Update: The final environmental impact report (EIR)for the plan was circulated April 7th, 2016.
