Reno Mayor Calls Emergency Meeting Amid Allegations Against City Manager

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve is calling for a special meeting  of the City Council amid a sexual harassment investigation of City Manager Andrew Clinger.

In a statement emailed on Saturday, Schieve says she takes the allegations against Clinger "seriously" and wants them investigated thoroughly and promptly. She's calling for an independent counsel to investigate the claims.

Three female employees have accused Clinger of sexual harassment, according to a complaint filed with the Nevada Attorney General over the handling of the case (embedded below).

An attorney representing the employees, Bill Peterson, accuses the City Council of holding a closed meeting about the matter in violation of Open Meeting laws in order to avoid public scrutiny.

In a statement to the Reno Gazette-Journal, Clinger called the allegations "utterly ridiculous."

We will update the story as more information becomes available.

Below is Mayor Schieve's full statement:

I take these allegations very seriously, and I believe they must be investigated thoroughly and promptly for the sake of everyone involved. I have always said I believe in transparency, and I continue to be committed to that. So I will be calling a special meeting of the council to discuss this issue. I plan to propose an independent counsel to investigate these allegations. I caution everyone that peoples' reputations are at stake here. So until the special meeting of the council is convened, I will not comment further so as not to influence the investigation and I urge others to do the same.
