Hospital Shortages

Health officials across the Mountain West are facing a triple threat of increased infections of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. Many hospitals, especially pediatric facilities, report being short on staff and beds as they grapple with a surge in patients.

Across the country, National Guard members are being called on to fill non-traditional roles in settings like hospitals and schools due to labor shortages. KUNR’s Lucretia Cunningham examines whether that’s likely to happen with the Nevada Guard.

When hospital workers are overwhelmed by a public health crisis and unable to provide standard care, crisis standards of care dictate who gets what kind of treatment.
