Grants Available To Improve Alternative Modes of Transportation In Nevada

Nearly $9 million in federal money to improve non-motorized travel is available to communities throughout Nevada. Reno Public Radio’s Anh Gray has more on the Transportation Alternatives Program.

The federal funds will be dispersed by the Nevada Department of Transportation, or NDOT. Joseph Spencer is with the agency.

“It’s transportation alternatives and we’re really trying to get the community focused on other ways to travel besides cars. There’s the bike; there's pedestrian walkways; there’s shared multi used paths. It’s more than cars on road; it’s our entire network that needs to be connected to one another through safe methods of course.”

Spencer says past grants have gone to a variety of small infrastructure improvements, including building safer routes to schools in Washoe County.

“There’s a project that we’re in the process of working on right now, that’s the Katherine Dunn Elementary School project. It was to add a larger pedestrian facility in front of the school that allowed it to be safer for the children to walk to and from school.”

NDOT is accepting applications through early next month from local governments and community organizations proposing to improve mobility.
