Join Dr. Paula Noble, Professor and Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno, as she discusses diatoms, a group of algae that produce intricate skeletons of glass. There are over 20,000 known species of diatoms inhabiting virtually every moist environment, and contributing 20-30% of the oxygen we breathe. Learn more about their life and habitat and discover how diatom arrangements became an art form and fascination of amateur naturalists in the Victorian era. You will hear about the masterful techniques used to create these tiny works of art and take a tour of many beautiful micro-mosaics captured by the bright field and dark field photography, featuring works by Johan Diedrich Möller (1844-1907), Henry Dalton (1836-1912), Eduard Thum (1847-1926) and Klauss Kemp (1937-1922).

We are so excited for our 6th annual Raise the Roof event on Saturday, September 13, 2025 from 11:30-1:30pm. KBUL on-air personality and Catholic Charities supporter, JJ Christy will perch atop our building braving the elements until we raise $150,000 to help fund our poverty assistance programs.
Catholic Charities continues to see an increase in need, and the numbers continue to build daily. Because of the kindness of our community, we have been able to be the safety net for individuals and families as they struggle to put food on the table, pay rent and utilities and simply meet their basic needs. Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada is addressing the root causes of poverty by encountering and accompanying those living in poverty on a journey to economic equality and the realization of a meaningful and purposeful life. Your support of our Raise the Roof event will allow us to continue to provide services to those trying to survive and then thrive.
We will be hosting catered lunch in conjunction with JJ’s stay on our roof and will be offering tours of our programs. We would love for you to visit our campus at 500 E. Fourth Street and see our work first hand. Please consider sponsoring this event with a sponsorship or donation, your support is vital for us to continue to do the work we do. If you are not able to sponsor this year, we would still love to have you attend our event in our Food Pantry at 500 E. Fourth St. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under.
