Reno Council Considering Preservation Measures For UNR Gateway District

The Reno City Council is holding a hearing Wednesday to consider next steps for properties south of the University of Nevada, Reno. Our contributor Bob Conrad reports.

UNR's expansion plans have raised community concerns about the school potentially removing some historic homes from Center Street for campus development.

The city could vote on new language for its master plan that would increase the consideration for preserving historic resources in UNR's so called gateway district.

Another area being examined is a small lot called Evans Park that the city owns. The City recommended transferring it to UNR. The Reno Recreation and Parks Commission voted against that request, and Reno officials say a joint management agreement between the city and school may be possible. Ultimately, the land is deed-restricted to remain as a park.
