COVID-19 cases rose by an estimated 18% during a period when heavy wildfire smoke blanketed the Reno area. The findings suggest that the smoke from wildfires increase the rate of COVID-19 transmission.

Smoky Skies Could Linger Until Snow Flies

Jul 22, 2021

Wildfire season began earlier than usual across the region this year, and with it came smoky skies. That's led to problems like unsafe air quality, and hundreds of delayed flights out of Denver on Monday. Now, meteorologists and air quality experts say hazy conditions will likely stick around until fall for many Mountain West communities.

News Brief

Severe weather may have played a role in the deaths of two veteran firefighters in a plane crash in northwest Arizona over the weekend.

Fire pilot Matt Miller, 48, and air tactical group supervisor Jeff Piechura, 62, were surveying a new wildfire near the small town of Wikieup, Ariz. on Saturday when the accident happened.

“There were storms in the area,” Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman Dolores Garcia said. “That’s one of the factors investigators will be looking through when trying to determine what happened.”

The Huff Fire northeast of Elko has burned more than 1,400 acres and destroyed one structure after sparking Tuesday afternoon.

Last fall, as record-sized wildfires burned in the Mountain West and ash fell from the sky, Bryan Shuman, a professor at the University of Wyoming, found himself looking back through old notes and emails from his wildfire research of subalpine forests. What stood out to him was how quickly the conversations he and his colleagues had been having escalated.

He said it went from predicting an increase in wildfires in the high-elevation forests of Wyoming and Colorado in "a few decades" to, "Wow, we just broke 2,000 years of fire records."

Communities across the West typically have wildfire plans. They lay out how to evacuate, where to send people and what to do. But those may need an update.

“We need to step up and start planning for worse scenarios than we’ve planned for in the past,” said Thomas Cova, a University of Utah geography professor.

Several wildfire projections for this summer aren’t looking good. And the Mountain West is facing a number of water shortages, according to Mojtaba Sadegh, who leads the Hydroclimate Lab at Boise State University.

“We are down on river flows, we are down on dam storage, we are down on soil moisture. It’s hotter. Everything is converging,” he said.
