Burning Man's Mobility Camp Addresses Obstacles

The week-long Burning Man arts festival is underway in Black Rock Desert about two hours north of Reno. While attendees stock up on water and ice, a theme camp for the physically impaired teaches a different kind of self-reliance. As Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey reports, accessibility issues are often overlooked by the larger Burning Man community.

Five Talents

Reno resident and visual storyteller Jessi LeMay recently returned from a stint in South Sudan, where she collected the stories of the everyday Sudanese people she encountered. 

LeMay traveled to the Warrap State of that country with an organization called Five Talents, which fights poverty in developing countries. She’s gave a talk Friday night at Sundance Books in Reno about her experience and joined Reno Public Radio’s Michelle Bliss for an overview.

Reno Tahoe Music Festival 8/21 and 8/22

The annual Reno Tahoe Music Festival is tonight and tomorrow at Bartley Ranch.  It’s sponsored by the Sierra Nevada Performing Arts Association.  The group raises money to give scholarships to college students studying the performing arts.  Danna O’Connor chats with  Judy Davis Rounds about the music festival and an upcoming performance of Rogers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, featuring Cami Thompson as the Fairy godmother.

Author's Basque Roots Inform Debut Novel

Gabriel Urza's debut novel, All That Followed, is generating a lot of national buzz. The author's name may be new to some, but his family's roots run deep in Nevada's Basque community — he's the grandson of renowned author Robert Laxalt. Reno Public Radio's Julia Ritchey caught up with Urza about his new book and connection to the Silver State.


The Mile High Jazz Band Association presents the 11th Annual Jazz and Beyond-Carson City Music Festival, going on through August 23rd.  Over 100 musicians will perform at multiple venues in Carson City.  Most events are free.  Details at

Amid Controversy, Burning Man Gears Up

UPDATE 8/10/15: The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has scrapped demands for a $1 million VIP compound at this year's Burning Man festival.  The agency also granted Burning Man its special recreation permit for the 2015 event, which will draw 70,000 people to Nevada's Black Rock Desert. According to the Reno Gazette Journal, the permit allows Burning Man staff and volunteers to immediately begin construction of Black Rock City.
