One of the best climate and oceanic record keepers through deep time are marine fossils, including ichthyosaurs and reefal ecosystems, which fossilize extremely well and have millions of years of data to share. The marine fossil record of Nevada shows one particular mass extinction record with eerily similar conditions to today. Join Montana Hodges, paleontologist, professor and science writer, to learn about mass extinctions of the past and present.

Join Jean-Paul Perrotte, Associate Professor of Composition and Director of the Electro-Acoustic Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno, as he discusses the creation of an immersive soundscape for the exhibition Deep Time: Sea Dragons of Nevada. Drawing from the ancient, mysterious world of prehistoric sea reptiles, Perrotte will discuss how sound can help bring the deep history and vast scale of Nevada’s prehistoric past to life.
Deep Blue, hosted by Sierra Regional Roller Derby, returns for its 11th year! Come watch 8 teams from across the western United States compete in 12 games during this 3 day roller derby tournament. There will be a bar and food truck on site, as well as drinks and snacks for purchase.
Never seen roller derby before? The rules of the game sound simple: there are two thirty-minute halves and the highest score wins. One designated player, the jammer, scores a point for each person they skate past from the other team. Each team has four blockers who want to keep the other team’s jammer from scoring points. Roller derby is a fun, fast game, and our events are family-friendly.
Sierra Regional Roller Derby is the first flat track roller derby team in the Reno-Tahoe area. We are a non-profit, skater-owned and operated league. Established in 2013, we are a regional league comprised of members from all over our surrounding communities.
